CHAPTER 36

Violet pressed the button to finish recording and dropped her head onto the kitchen table. ‘That was a tough episode.’

Angie ceased chewing her thumb cuticle. ‘The Animals were decent, letting us discuss eliminating them as suspects. They could’ve refused. It’s right we didn’t use their names, though. There are people who jump to the wrong conclusions, deciding innocent people are guilty. The Animals proved their innocence, well, all but one.’

Violet raised her head. ‘Listen to me. Wolfe didn’t kill Julie. He’s a sweet man.’

‘I don’t believe for a second he did. It’s only fair we ask what he was doing around the time she was buried, though. I’m confused as to why Dad kept saying it was his fault when we showed him Julie’s photo. It was such strange behaviour.’

‘Wolfe’s developed a habit of repeating phrases which don’t mean anything. He probably said it was his fault because of feeling bad something awful happened on his patch. Wolfe isn’t a murderer. He’d never have cheated on Babs, either.’

‘I know. They were attached at the hip. We do need to have a chat with Dad again about Julie. He might remember something important.’

‘Do you have any idea what Wolfe was doing when she disappeared?’

‘I was a newborn, so my memories of that time are limited.’

Violet nudged Angie with her elbow. ‘All right, you sarky mare. I was wondering if your parents mentioned anything later. We should’ve asked the gang. Are we totally crap at investigating?’

‘The only way we can learn is to do it. Besides, we’re in too deep to stop. Er, I’ve got a massive favour to ask.’ Angie looked at her friend with pleading eyes.

‘You want me to talk to Wolfe.’

‘Please.’

‘I’m one step ahead. Doug and I are seeing him tomorrow. I’ll find a quiet moment, even if it means gaffer-taping the kids’ mouths shut. Somehow, I’ll make sure Dougie isn’t around. He’ll go apeshit if he finds out I’m asking Wolfe questions about Julie. Hopefully, he’ll be on the ball and remember what he was doing back then. It’s just getting information and eliminating him, as we did with the rest of the gang.’

Unbidden memories entered Angie’s mind of rare occasions when Wolfe unleashed anger on disrespectful customers. She recalled retreating into a corner while he used brute force to eject idiots. Angie reasoned she’d never seen Wolfe hit anyone. He certainly wasn’t a killer, was he?

‘I’m learning that investigating can be an uncomfortable business,’ Violet began. ‘You unintentionally upset those you love. Also, you face grim stuff. Everything we’re doing is for Julie. I refuse to let another birthday pass by with Yvonne at the police station, begging for answers. At least she cares. I can’t believe how cruel their parents were. Some people don’t deserve children.’

‘Finn, Cara, and Maisie are lucky to have Doug and you.’

Violet rubbed her forearms. ‘Despite my attempts to fuck them up, my children have turned out okay so far. While Cara continues treating me like the enemy, she’s started to realise it.
